What are Backyard Ecology’s Values?

Backyard Ecology™’s values are:

🦋 A deep love of the natural world and appreciation for the nature that we can find around our homes and in our communities.

It’s easy to fall into the trap of believing that the plants and animals we see everyday are “normal,” “boring,” and generally not as “important” or “fascinating” as those in some faraway, pristine location. But that’s not true. In fact, sometimes science knows less about the nature outside our doors than it does about plants, animals, and ecosystems halfway across the world because scientists are human and can take the “everyday stuff” for granted as much as we do.

🦋 Respect, acceptance, and open-mindedness.

What works for you and the choices that you make may not work or be the right choices for someone else. And that’s ok. We all have unique situations and therefore our balancing points and choices are going to be unique.

🦋 Laughter and friendship.

The best learning opportunities, friendships, and communities develop when we are all talking, laughing, and helping each other. Everyone has value and something to offer.

🦋 Lifelong learning and curiosity.

No one has all of the answers and finding the answer to one question often leads to more questions. That’s half the fun.

🦋 It’s ok to make mistakes.

None of us are perfect. We’ve all done things we look back on and wish we had done differently. To paraphrase Maya Angelou, the important thing is that you “do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.
